Real ID documents in North Carolina: what to bring to the DMV
Updated October 2026
What Real ID is
A Real ID is a driver's license or state ID that meets a federal security standard. You need it to fly domestically or enter federal facilities after the enforcement date — the deadline has been pushed back repeatedly; check the TSA / DHS site for the current one.
What to bring
DHS publishes a list of accepted documents for Real ID that all states use. You typically need:
- One proof of identity and date of birth — e.g. valid US passport, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or certificate of naturalization/citizenship.
- One proof of Social Security — your card, a W-2, or a pay stub with the full SSN.
- Two proofs of North Carolina residency — e.g. bank statement, utility bill, mortgage statement, lease, or insurance document.
- Proof of any name change if your current name differs from the identity document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order).
At the office
- Bring originals — copies or printouts are not accepted.
- The clerk will scan and return each document; you do not leave them behind.
- Pay the Real ID fee (often the same as a regular license renewal, sometimes slightly higher).
- Your new card arrives by mail; a temporary paper license is usually issued immediately.
Real ID vs. Enhanced ID
An Enhanced ID is a separate product that also lets you cross the US-Canada or US-Mexico land border by car. It costs more and is only available in some states. You do not need Enhanced if you have a passport.
For the current DHS-mandated list of accepted documents and any state-specific extras, see the DMV website: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/default.aspx.
