How to book a North Carolina DMV appointment in 2026

Updated October 2026

Book online

  1. Open the DMV appointment site: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/default.aspx.
  2. Pick the office closest to you. Smaller offices often have shorter waits.
  3. Choose the service: usually "Learner permit" or "Knowledge test" for the written exam.
  4. Pick a date and time. Mornings are usually less crowded.
  5. Enter your contact details — most states text or email a confirmation.

What to bring

Bring the same documents you would for a regular application (see our Documents guide). Pay the application fee online if the site allows it — it saves time at the counter.

Walk-ins

Some North Carolina DMV offices accept a limited number of walk-ins each day, often in the morning. Walk-in wait times and hours vary a lot between offices and over time — the DMV site or a phone call is the most reliable way to confirm.

If you have to reschedule

Cancellation and no-show rules are set by DMV and change over time. Most agencies let you cancel for free a day or two ahead; last-minute cancellations may be recorded on your profile and repeat no-shows can limit your ability to book for a while. Confirm the current rule on the DMV site.

For the North Carolina road test

Behind-the-wheel tests are usually scheduled separately from the written test, after you have held your permit for the required period. The DMV site has a separate calendar for road tests.
